Eco Committee

Here at Newton Leys Primary, we care deeply about environmental issues and have a strong desire to actively protect our planet.

Each year, our children are offered the opportunity to become an Eco Warrior. One child from every class from Nursery to Year 6 is selected to represent their class and take on various eco-challenges to make our school more sustainable, increase environmental learning and benefit our local community.

For the past 2 years, we have enrolled on the Eco Schools Programme which involves a seven-step framework focusing on three Eco Schools topics.

In 2022-2023 the Eco Committee planned our activities around Biodiversity, School Grounds and Energy. We took part in numerous environmental awareness days such as Recycling Week, Earth Day, RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch, The Great Big School Clean, Cut Your Carbon Week and Switch Off Fortnight. We were recognised for our efforts and awarded the Eco School Green Flag Award.

In 2023-2024 the Eco Committee chose to focus our learning around Healthy Living, Water and School Grounds. This time we took part in the Woodland Trust tree planting, Keep Britain Tidy, Pre-loved uniform sales, National Vegetarian Week, World Water Day and National Children’s Gardening Week. We even raised over £200 from our uniform sales to buy more resources for the eco committee. We were awarded the Eco Schools Green Flag Plaque Award.

This year a new team of eco warriors will be taking part in lots of exciting new activities as part of The Woodland Trust Green Tree Schools Award.
