Geography
Intent
We want our Geography Curriculum to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world around them. At Newton Leys we aim to equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people and natural and human environments, together with an understanding of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area so they can develop a real sense of who they are, make comparisons with other areas and identify what makes their local area unique and special to them.
Implementation
At Newton Leys Primary School, we use the objectives from the National Curriculum to deliver our Geography topics. In each year group, the children will be taught key geographical skills and concepts linked to each Geography Topic. Each Key Stage has a Progression of Skills Geography Pack, which details the key skills and concepts that must be taught in each year group. These key skills have been divided under the following headings.
Geography is taught at least once a half term each year and alternates with History. Rosenshine's principles are utilised within teaching to strengthen the children's memory and build on prior knowledge and experiences. The lessons begin with a flashback to retrieve memories about the children's previous lessons and learning about the topic and then the children's knowledge is assessed through formative assessments during the lessons, self assessment and end of unit assessments. Children that require support to understand concepts are provided with scaffolding to enable them to achieve the learning.
Impact
At Newton Leys Primary School, we hope that our Geography Curriculum will encourage children to learn to make links and form a life- long love of investigating, enquiry and questioning. We want to ensure that our children are equipped with the geographical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world. We want the children to have thoroughly enjoyed learning about geography, therefore encouraging them to undertake new life experiences now and in the future.
