English as an Additional Language

WHAT IS EAL?

EAL refers to English as an Additional Language. EAL learners are those whose first language is a language or dialect other than English and who require additional support to assist them to develop proficiency in English. The learner may already be fluent in several other languages or dialects.

HOW DO WE CELEBRATE BILINGUALISM?

We, at Newton Leys Primary School, believe that the first language is an essential part of identity, valuing its impact positively on how children see themselves and their place in the world.

We provide an inclusive environment welcoming to all and believe that bilingualism should be recognised as a special achievement as it can enrich a child’s education experience and have a positive effect on learning.

We celebrate and foster awareness of home language through assemblies, Culture Day, displays and work in class.

HOW DO WE SUPPORT YOUR CHILD, IF THEY NEED IT?

  • We provide a buddy system for pupils new to the school.
  • Pupils work in small groups using fluent English speakers as role models.
  • Pupils may use their first language to support their learning.
  • We use resources specifically designed to support the learning of English.
  • Use of visual cues, whenever possible.
  • Pupils attend small group pre/post-tutoring sessions with our Specialist Teaching Assistant to introduce key concepts or vocabulary, if needed.

WHAT CAN YOU DO AS A PARENT TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD AT HOME?

  • Talk about items/objects in the house such as clothes, kitchen utensils, furniture etc.
  • Read stories in English and talk about what they have read.
  • Practise phonics to help your child with their reading and spelling.
  • Play games such as snakes and ladders to help with basic counting.
  • When out of the home, talk about what you are doing, where you are going and what you see around you.
  • Speak in your home/mother tongue with your child. Use every occasion to develop and extend it.

HOW CAN YOU HELP US IN SCHOOL?

  • Read bilingual stories in class
  • Help with Culture Day
  • Cook a traditional dish
  • Share festivals
  • Share home traditions
  • Deliver assemblies about your culture
  • Translate key vocabulary words
